New Delhi, June 2 (UNI) The Rouse Avenue court here on Sunday sent Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to judicial custody till June 5 after he surrendered on the completion of his interim bail period.
Following the expiration of his interim bail on June 1, Kejriwal surrendered before the Tihar jail authorities on Sunday and was taken by the Tihar officials to the Delhi court and produced before a special judge.
The Delhi CM was sent to judicial custody till June 5, when the Rouse Avenue court will also decide on Kejriwal’s regular bail application.
Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 on the charges of money laundering in Delhi’s new excise policy case.
The Supreme Court had on May 10 granted interim bail to Kejriwal till June 1 to enable him to campaign for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi had requested the bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna to extend the interim bail till June 5 as the Lok Sabha election results were to be declared on June 4.
The same bench headed by Justice Khanna had granted interim bail to Kejriwal but the bench refused to extend the interim bail from June 1 to June 5.
The Supreme Court meanwhile after the completion of arguments from both sides from ED and Kejriwal reserved its judgment on the Delhi CM’s plea challenging the arrest by Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Kejriwal on May 27 again moved before the Vacation bench and also before the Registry of the Supreme Court seeking an extension of his interim bail but the apex court rejected his plea because the order on his main plea had already been reserved.
The apex court, however, gave liberty to Kejriwal to approach the District Court for his regular bail.
Kejriwal then moved two applications before the Rouse Avenue Court. One application was to extend his interim bail for one week on medical grounds and the other plea was to grant him regular bail
The Rouse Avenue court did not respond to his first plea as the time was too short but will hear his plea on granting regular bail on June 5.
