Paris, June 8 (UNI) Top-seeded Iga Swiatek stormed to her third consecutive title at Roland Garros, five in all Grand Slam tournaments, with a straight-set victory over Jasmine Paolini here on Saturday.
The Polish world No. 1 needed just 68 minutes to crash Italy’s 12th seed 6-2, 6-1, once again demonstrating her unparalleled dominance on the clay court.
Having just celebrated her 23rd birthday last week, Swiatek became just the third female player in the Open era to win three French Open titles in a row. The previous two players who have done it are Monica Seles (1990-1992) and Justine Henin (2005-2007).
Starting from being broken in the third game of the first set and trailing 1-2, Swiatek went on to win 10 consecutive games before her opponent finally held a serve in the sixth game of the second. But the defending champion showed no mercy in her serve, wrapping up the victory with a brilliant serve.
