Several houses destroyed in a major fire in Bengal

Kolkata, Apr 13 (UNI) A major fire broke on Saturday at a slum, destroying some 50 houses, many of which are brick-built, at Mela Ground near Chata Kol on Dum Dum Road in the north-western part of the city, official sources said.

There had been no report of any casualty, but several cattle heads were burnt to death in a nearby cattle shed, Dum Dum constituency MP Sougata Roy said.

West Bengal fire brigade minister Sujit Bose said some ten firefighting vehicles were pressed into service to combat the leaping flames.

He said due to the narrow entry point and congested area, the fire fighting engines had a tough time tracing out the source of fire.

Bose said their first job was to control the flames and then to assess the damages of property.

He said the government would look into the matter.

CPI(M)’s Dum Dum Lok Sabha candidate Sujan Chakraborty also visited the area and talked to the affected people.
