Sensex surges 271.50 points

Mumbai, Jan 10 (UNI) The BSE Sensex on Wednesday rallied 271.50 pts to close at 71,657.71 as buying was seen in BSE services and consumer durable stocks despite a weak Asian market.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) rose 73.85 points to 21,618.70.

The NSE was days high and low, at 21,641.85 and 21,448.65 pts, respectively.

A trend was seen during the day.

As the Sensex fell 3 points to open at 71,383, During the day, it dropped 276 points to 71,110.98, days low. Later, it erased earlier losses and jumped nearly 347 points to 71,733.84, days high, before closing at 71,657.71, up 271.50 points from its previous close.

Renewed buying in BSE services, consumer durables, and consumer discretionary goods and services stocks kept the market firm today.

The Mid Cap rose by 0.24 pc and the Small Cap by 0.33 pc.

In 30 scrips, 14 advanced while 16 were down.

The gainers were Reliance Industries, which was up by 2.83 pc to Rs 2653.60, HCL Technology, which was up by 2.22 pc to Rs 1492.80, ICICI Bank, which was up by 1.36 pc to Rs 992.60, Tata Motors, which was up by 1.19 pc to Rs 809.05, and Wipro, which was up by 1.05 pc to Rs 455.50.

The losers were NTPC by 1.97 pc to Rs 313.55, Powergrid by 1.55 pc to Rs 238.50, Ultracemco by 1 pc to Rs 9795, and Bajaj Finance by 0.64 pc to Rs 7671.75.

The Asian market remained negative as Strai Times fell 0.57 pc, Hang Seng fell by 0.58 pc, and Taiwan Weighted fell by 0.46 pc to Rs 0.46.
