Satwik-Chirag in men’s doubles semis in Malaysia Open

Kuala Lumpur, (UNI) Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated China’s Ren Xiang Yu and He Ji Ting in straight games and stormed into the semifinals of the Malaysia Open Super 1000 tournament here on Friday.

The world No.2 Indian pair dashed the hopes of the world No.32 Chinese pair in just 35 minutes with the scoreline reading 21-11 21-8. They will either lock horns with Korea’s Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae or the third-seed Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.

The Indian duo forced the Chinese pair on a catch-up trail as they had their nose ahead 7-0 in a flash. Satwik and Chirag were 11-2 at the break and wrapped the first game in a flash.

Satwik and Chirag continued their impetus after an end exchange, leading 11-4 at the interval and soon completing the match.

Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto ate humble pie at the hands of Japan’s Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi 15-21 13-21 in the women’s doubles quarterfinals.

The Indian pair could not repeat yesterday’s performance when they astounded former world No.1 and two-time world champions Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara. They lost 15-21 13-21 in 39 minutes.
