Kolkata, Feb 15 (UNI) Police on Thursday stopped Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, and three of his party MLAs at Basanti highway on the way to trouble-torn Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas, official sources said.
Police put up a three-tier barricade and stopped the bus Adhikari was riding to Sandeshkhali where he was to meet the local people, especially the women, who alleged sexual harassment and grabbing of land of tribal people by the TMC leaders including that of absconding Sahjahajan Sheikh.
Besides, Adhikari, BJP legislators Tapasi Malik, Chandana Barui, and Shankar Ghosh, were stopped by the police on the highway where they began a sit-in-dharna on the road.
Meanwhile, a team of National Commission for Scheduled Castes headed by its Chairman Arun Kumar Halder visiting the restive area, complained about the state government’s ” non-cooperation”.
He said they would talk to the affected people at Sandeshkhali and submit a report to the authorities.
Another report said BJP’s National President Jagat Prakash Nadda would send a 6-member party delegation, comprising of women,to make an spot study and report to him about Sandeshkhali.
