Abuja, Aug 21 (UNI) At least 40 suspected terrorists, including five commanders, were killed in recent military airstrikes in Nigeria’s northern state of Borno, an official said Wednesday.
Edward Gabkwet, the spokesman for the Nigerian Air Force, told the media in the capital of Abuja that the airstrikes were carried out on Aug. 16 in the Southern Tumbuns area of Borno, where suspected terrorists were regrouping.
He described the air raids as a decisive effort to further weaken terrorists operating in the northeast region while protecting innocent civilians and troops there.
Gabkwet said the airstrikes were conducted on intelligence confirming “the clandestine migration of terrorists into the area from neighboring locations.”
“This operation, no doubt, has significantly degraded the operational capacity of the few remaining terrorists in the region,” he said.
