Tel Aviv, Sep 13 (UNI) An attack by Lebanese movement Hezbollah on the base of the 8200 Glilot intelligence unit in the suburbs of Tel Aviv resulted in the death of 22 Israeli servicemen and left 74 injured, the Lebanese Al Mayadeen TV channel reported, citing its European security sources.
Hezbollah launched a massive strike on Israeli army targets in late August in response to the killing of senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in an Israeli air force attack on a Beirut suburb. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech that the main target of the retaliatory strike was the Israeli army’s 8200 Glilot unit base in a Tel Aviv suburb.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said after the Hezbollah strike that Israeli forces had carried out a preemptive strike on Hezbollah targets and destroyed thousands of rockets hours before the Lebanese resistance retaliated.
The Israeli military said about 100 Air Force aircraft had taken part in the operation to destroy Hezbollah facilities and weapons. They estimated the damage the attack ultimately caused to Israel was minimal.
