Head-on collision in Bangladesh leaves at least 7 dead

Dhaka, Feb 16 (UNI) A head-on collision between a bus and an autorickshaw killed seven people in Bangladesh on Friday, a local police official said.

The fatal road accident happened at around 11:30 a.m. local time in the Mymensingh district, some 122 km north of Dhaka, said Md Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station in Mymensingh.

He said the bus collided with the autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction, killing the seven on the spot.

Six of the victims were passengers of the autorickshaw and another was its driver, he added.

The exact cause of the accident is under investigation.

Bangladesh has a higher fatality rate for road accidents in the world due to shoddy highways, poorly maintained vehicles, violation of traffic rules by inept drivers, and a lack of monitoring by the traffic department.

According to the Road Safety Foundation, a local non-government organization, a total of 512 people were killed and 793 injured in 517 road accidents in Bangladesh in December last year.
