Port-au-Prince, (UNI) Haiti’s interim Prime Pinister, Garry Conille, has officially assumed office, a statement from his office said on Tuesday.
In late May, the Haitian Transitional Presidential Council selected Conille, director of the local department of the UN International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), to lead the interim government. He already served as prime minister in 2011-2012.
“In the course of a ceremony on Monday, Prime Minister Doctor Garry Conille received an expanded ruling on his appointment as a head of the transitional government from the chairman of the Transitional Presidential Council, Edgard Leblanc Fils,” the prime minister’s office said on X.
During the ceremony, the prime minister proposed that all the interested parties drop their disputes and unite behind important national interest, the office said.
Haiti has long been mired in a social and political crisis that escalated after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise on July 7, 2021. The country has faced an unprecedented increase in the activities of criminal groups, while the humanitarian situation has deteriorated due to a multitude of natural disasters.
