New Delhi, Feb 13 (UNI) In a boost to infrastructure development in the Northeast, the government on Tuesday sanctioned Rs 382.10 crore for construction of a new 2-lane highway with paved shoulders connecting Majuli and Jorhat and Rs 1742.11 crore for the construction of 4-lane section on NH-6 in Aizawl and Kolasib districts in Mizoram.
Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari sanctioned Rs 382.10 crore for the construction of a new 2-lane highway with paved shoulders connecting Majuli and Jorhat on the recently designated NH 715K in Assam. Moreover, a flyover on NH-715, complete with its approaches and service roads, is included in the project, spanning a total length of 20.479 km.
The Minister said in a social media post X that these imitative aims to establish direct road connectivity between Jorhat and Majuli, addressing the absence of such a link currently.
He said presently residents rely on river ferries across the Brahmaputra during daylight hours, posing safety concerns, especially during periods of high flooding.
He said the development of approach roads and the Majuli Bridge will ensure continuous connectivity, significantly improving the socio-economic conditions of the local population and promoting tourism. This strategic infrastructure investment is poised to reduce travel time and vehicle operating costs for road users, Gadkari added.
He also sanctioned Rs 1742.11 crore for the construction of the 4-lane N Kawnpui (N Mualvum) – Sairang section on NH-6, situated along the Silchar –Valrengte – Sairang road in the Aizawl and Kolasib districts in Mizoram.
On his social media handle, Gadkari said this 24.41 km project will be executed under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode as part of National Highway (Original) – North East (NH (O)-NE).
He said the envisioned road infrastructure aims to facilitate uninterrupted traffic flow circumventing interference from local traffic in developed areas. This initiative seeks to alleviate congestion in the urban zones, thereby augmenting road safety within these built-up areas.
The Union Minister said the strategic project also endeavors to sidestep heavily populated areas, diminish congestion, and heighten road safety within the city of Aizawl. Additionally, it aspires to curtail the length of the existing National Highway by 25 kilometers, from Vairengte to Sairang.
