Washington, (UNI) The United States is satisfied with Japan’s plan to discharge treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant later this year, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday.
“With regard to the release of water from Fukushima: we are satisfied with Japan’s plans, which are safe and in accordance with international standards,” Blinken said during remarks to the press.
Japan has coordinated with the International Energy Agency (IEA) and their plans are in compliance with IEA nuclear safety standards, Blinken said.
Earlier this month, Japanese media reported that Japan is planning on releasing the treated water into the sea between late August and early September. The Fukushima plant was damaged by an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011, causing three nuclear reactors to melt down.
The matter is reportedly set to be discussed during an upcoming trilateral meeting between the US, Japan and South Korea. However, the South Korean Foreign Ministry refuted reports that a joint statement will include support for the plan, which faces some opposition in South Korea.
