Bengaluru FC lock horns with Chennaiyin FC in ISL match on Saturday

Chennai, Dec 27 (UNI) Bengaluru FC will be looking to get back on track as they travel to Chennai for the Indian Super League (ISL) match with Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Saturday.

The Blues, who were held to a 2-2 draw by FC Goa in their last match, face a Chennaiyin side struggling with consistency, having secured just one win in their last six matches.

“We know Chennaiyin are a strong team, and they play with a unique style. They are dangerous, particularly with their crosses and set-pieces. We need to be better in those situations to get a positive result,” said Bengaluru FC Head Coach Gerard Zaragoza ahead of the match. “Our aim is to secure all six points from the next two matches.”

Currently sitting second on the table, Bengaluru FC are in pursuit of Mohun Bagan Super Giant, while FC Goa trail closely behind. Chennaiyin FC, under the guidance of Owen Coyle, have found it difficult to break into the playoff spots. With only 15 points, they are currently in ninth place.

For Bengaluru FC, addressing their habit of conceding early goals will be key. The Blues will look to build on their recent strong finishes in games by ensuring they start on the front foot. Defensive resilience will be crucial, especially as Bengaluru’s last clean sheet came in October.

Skipper Sunil Chhetri has been in excellent form, contributing nine goals this season, while Edgar Mendez has played a crucial role with seven goal involvements. Ryan Williams, returning from injury, has also made an impact, scoring three goals in his last five matches.

“We’ve been finishing games strongly, but we need to improve our starts and control the game,” said Zaragoza.

“The players coming off the bench have been crucial in changing the flow of the match for us, and that’s been a positive sign.”

Chennaiyin FC’s home form has been a concern, as they have managed just five points from five matches, with their defense leaking 19 goals. They will be without defender Ryan Edwards due to suspension, and will rely on attackers like Connor Shields, Daniel Chima Chukwu, Irfan Yadwad, and Wilmar Jordan Gil to find the back of the net.

The match kicks off at 7:30 pm, and fans can tune in to live coverage on JioCinema, Sports-18 3, and Star Sports 3.
