Gautam Haldar’s debut film Bhalo Theko offered an alternative philosophy, an ideology other than the materialistic philosophy of a competitive, careerist existence. He achieved this through the central character Anandi (Vidya Balan in her debut role) who loves nature, poetry, music, much more than she cares about the fiery ambitions of her scholarly boyfriend. Her world is defined by commitment to her family, and is filled with the chirping of birds, the blooming of flowers, the planting of a sapling that blooms into a tree, with music practiced by her uncle (Soumitra Chatterjee) and with nostalgic journeys into a past dominated by an extremist older brother who disappears into the night and never comes back.
