Dehradun, Aug 21 (UNI) At least 7 people were killed when a bus carrying pilgrims from Gujarat fell into a gorge in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand on Sunday.
As per the details shared by the Disaster Management Center in-charge of Uttarkashi district, DS Patwal, and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) Vineet Kumar, a tragic incident took place on the Gangotri National Highway. A bus, with the registration number UK 07 PA 8585, was carrying passengers from Gujarat when it lost control near Gangnani and plunged into a deep gorge of approximately 50 meters.
The incident sent shockwaves through the rescue team, who were quick to respond. Led by SDRF Inspector Jagdamba Prasad, the team promptly rescued 28 out of the 35 passengers and rushed them to the hospital for treatment. The said bus was carrying devotees who were returning from Gangotri Dham under the leadership of Ashwini L. Johny, Manager of Shree Travel Company of Bhavnagar (Gujarat).
In this accident, the dead bodies of seven people, namely Ganpat Mehta s/o Shri Pratap Rai Mehta, 61 years, Karan Bhati s/o Shri Prabhu ji, 29 years, Rajesh Bhai Mehar s/o Shri Raghav Bhai, 40 years, Giga Bhai s/o Shri Gabha Bhai Amar, 40 years, Meena Kamleshwar Upadhyay w/o Kamleshwar Vaman Bhai Upadhyay, Kamleshwar Vaman Bhai Upadhyay, 52 years, Joshi Anirudh bhai s/o Shri Hansmukh Ram Rai and Rakshaji Mehta w/o Ganpat Rai Mehta, 57 years have been recovered and handed over to the district police, while other injured pilgrims are being treated at a local hospital.
