US: Barge crashes into bridge in Oklahoma

Oklahoma, Mar 31 (UNI) A barge hit a bridge in the US state of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

“US-59 south of Sallisaw at the Kerr Reservoir is completely shut down at this time due to a barge that has struck the bridge. Troopers are diverting traffic away from the area. The bridge is going to be shut down until inspections of the bridge can be made,” the agency said on X on Saturday.

Later on Saturday, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation said that the bridge was reopened after engineers inspected its structure.

In the early hours of Tuesday, a commercial Singapore-flagged cargo ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore soon after it departed the port for Sri Lanka’s city of Colombo. The bridge collapsed, sending at least eight people from a construction crew working on the bridge into the water. Six people were presumed dead Tuesday evening, the authorities said. The local police told a press conference on Wednesday that two bodies were recovered from the water. Ship traffic in the port of Baltimore was suspended until further notice following the bridge’s collapse.
