Toll increases to 10 in TN cracker unit blast

Chennai, May 10 (UNI) The toll in cracker unit blast at Sengamalapatti village in Sivakasi in the southern Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu, rose to 10.

The deceased included six women.

Police sources said 13 people who were injured in the blast and sustained burns were undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The blast occurred on Thursday afternoon when about 100 workers were engaged in making fancy crackers at the private cracker unit.

While six workers were killed on the spot three others died at the Sivakasi Government Hospital.

After the rescue operations following the blast one of the worker was reported missing.

His charred remains were later recovered from the debris late last night, taking to toll to 10.

Meanwhile, police have registered five cases against the cracker unit owner Saravanakumar and two others–the foreman and the Manager of the unit.

President Droupadi Murmu, Tamil Nadu Governor R.N.Ravi, Chief Minister M.K.Stalin and leaders of various political parties including BJP State President K.Annamalai, TNCC Chief K.Selvaperunthagai, TMC Leader G.K.Vasan,PMK Leaders condoled the deaths in the cracker blast.
