Chennai, Aug 26 (UNI) At least three people were charred to death and several others trapped when a major fire broke out in a tourist train near Madurai district of Tamil Nadu on Saturday morning, southern railway and police sources said.
The train was waiting to enter the Madurai station when the fire broke out after passengers lit up the LPG cylinder for cooking when it exploded.
Initial reports said three people were killed on the spot, while an unconfirmed report said the toll had gone up to six. Several people were trapped as the fire spread to adjacent coaches.
Firefighters rushed to the spot after receiving the information, and rescue operations are on.
At least 60 people managed to escape by jumping out of the train.
The train was coming from Lucknow, carrying pilgrims to Tamil Nadu for temple visits.
The report said that all three deceased were natives of Uttar Pradesh.
