Suvendu & Brinda reach Sandeshkhali after Cal HC order

Kolkata, Feb 20 (UNI) BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday was greeted with flowers and blowing of conch shells by the people on his arrival at the restive Sandeshkhali in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district as he was allowed by the state police following a Calcutta High Court order, official sources said.

Court sources said the division bench upheld its single bench order after the state government had moved against Justice Kaushik Chandra’s order allowing the Opposition leader to go provided he would abide by the existing prohibitory orders.

Adhikari and CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat were stopped by the state police at Dhamakhali, some 3 km away from tense Sandeshkhali.

After Calcutta High Court fresh order, police lifted the barricades and allowed both Adhikari and Karat to proceed to Sandeshkhali by crossing the river on speed boats.

As Adhikari and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh arrived the Sandeshkhali island, the people, especially the women, blew conch shells and showered flowers on them at Block No 2 of the trouble-torn area.

Posters were also plastered on the wall, demanding the arrest of mastermind of the alleged crime Sahjahan Sheikh, who is evading the arrest since January 5 after allegedly orchestrating attacks on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials and CRPF jawans during a raid in alleged ration scam.

CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat also reached at Sandeshkhali and was seen talking to the people.

” This is an unprecedented move by a government who is headed by a woman curtailing the democratic rights of the people,” Karat told reporters.

She said the mastermind of the alleged crime, Sahjahan Sheikh, was under the TMC government protection. She alleged the women in the state were unsafe as they were being molested while the perpetrators roamed scot free.
