Prithviraj Chavan cautions about post-LS poll scenario

Kolhapur, Aug 13 (UNI) Observing that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are very crucial for democracy, senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Sunday cautioned that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi wins the election, he will push the country towards dictatorship.

Addressing a press conference here this evening, Chavan, who is on a two-day visit to the district for reviewing the political situation in Kolhapur and Hatkanagale Lok Sabha constituencies as an observer, said that Modi’s address in the Lok Sabha on no-confidence motion was clearly indicative of he is getting authoritarian.

Considering his speech, a question arises as to whether democracy will survive or not in the country, he wondered.

The Congress leader expressed that if Modi and his Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) were elected again in coming general elections, then no election would be held in the country and if held for satisfaction of the people, it would be a sham.

He alleged that Modi has captured all constitutional institutions in India and effectively, the country would move towards a political situation like in Russia, China, or fascist Germany and Italy, because the Constitution and democracy would cease to exist in the country, thus pushing it towards dictatorship, he explained.

He asserted that the Congress party was true to its ideology and never made any compromises with it, and only they can fight against fascist tendency, he claimed.

On Modi’s appeal to his party’s MPs to not demand votes in his name, Chavan replied that it seems that now the magic behind Modi’s name has ended.

And, if his party’s MPs still demand votes in Modi’s name, then countrymen will ask questions on employment, inflation and other assurances given by him, he said.

If I.N.D.I.A. alliance fights together sincerely, then it could easily defeat BJP in next Lok Sabha elections, he added.
