Minimum of Shimla plummets to zero degrees

Shimla, Feb 24 (UNI) The minimum temperature in this capital town plummets to freezing point, as it was at zero degrees on Saturday morning.

According to Shimla Met. Office, the minimum temperature in Shimla was 0.0 degrees Celsius, 3.7 degrees below normal.

Tourist resorts Manali and Dalhousie were 1.8 and 1.2 degrees. Keylong and Kaza remained coldest places at minus 15 and 18 degrees, and Kukamseri at minus 12.8 degrees.

Kalpa, Kinnaur, had 4.3 centimetres of snowfall and a record low of 3.4 degrees. Tourist resort Kufri also received traces of snow and snowflakes. Tourist resort Narkanda was minus 3.8 degrees in the district, and Kufri was minus 2.2.

In Kinnaur district, Nichar had 10 cm of snowfall, Sangla 2.8 cm, and Pooh 0.6 cm, and mercury plunged to minus five to six degrees Celsius.

The rest of the places were mainly dry, but the minimum temperature stayed below six degrees: Solan 1.2, Jubberhati, and Bhuntar airport were two degrees, Una, Mandi, and Bilaspur were four degrees, Kangra 5.2, Dharmshala, and Chamba 5.7 degrees each.

Bhavnagar in Kinnaur had 3.8 mm of rainfall. The light clouds are also hovering over the state. A forecast of light snowfall is made for Lahual-Spiti and Kinnaur in the high reaches and light rainfall at isolated places in Kangra, Kullu Chamba, and Shimla districts.

Met Office predicted mostly dry weather till Sunday, and rain and snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightening may occur in a few places from Monday onwards.

A total of 336 roads and four national highways in the state are snowbound, including 269 roads in Lahaul Spiti, 44 in Chamba, and 22 in Kullu district.

110 power transmission lines are disrupted in the state, including 63 in Chamba and 47 in Lahual-Spiti district, and ten water supply schemes are affected by inclement weather—seven in Chamba and three in Lahaul Spiti.

Tourist resorts Kufri and Narkanda are witnessing heavy footfalls of tourists as recent snowfall is still mounted on the landscapes.
