ECI dismisses Jairam’s letter on VVPAT; says nothing new for clarification

New Delhi, Jan 5 (UNI) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has iterated its full faith in the use of EVMs in elections, and dismissed Congress leader Jairam Ramesh’s request that the I.N.D.I.A bloc be given an opportunity to put forth its views on VVPAT to the apex poll panel.

The ECI said “there was nothing new for clarification”.

It may be mentioned that Ramesh on December 30 had written to the ECI requesting that a team of INDIA alliance leaders be given an opportunity to meet the poll panel and put forth their views on Voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT).

In a reply to the Congress leader, the ECI said, “The letter has no new assertions or reasonable and legitimate doubts which requires further clarifications”.

It also stated that ECI had put in all material with regards to “EVMs in public domain including latest updated FAQs, adequately and comprehensively cover all reasonable and legitimate aspects of use of EVMs in Indian elections”.

The ECI also mentioned that several aspects with regard to VVPAT is sub-judice in the Supreme Court.

The ECI also mentioned, “It is beyond any explanation that out of context references are being made to other countries and their Constitutional Courts about use of EVMs in elections. Based on the outcomes of the elections conducted using EVMs. legal frameworks, established jurisprudence, technical security and administrative safeguards, Commission has full faith in use of EVMs in election”.
