New Delhi, Aug 9 (UNI) The Rajya Sabha on Friday witnessed heated exchange between Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan leading to multiple adjournments and ruckus in the Upper House.
The House also saw the Opposition staging a walk-out amid massive uproar. The Congress party accused the Chairman of being ‘biased’ claiming that the Opposition’s voice was being suppressed.
The face-off between Dhankhar and Bachchan erupted after the SP leader accused the Chairman of talking to her in an ‘unacceptable’ tone and also switching off the mic when the Leader of Opposition (LoP) was speaking.
“I am an artist. I understand body language and expressions. But your tone is not right. We are your colleagues, but your tone is unacceptable,” the actor-turned politician said.
On this, Chairman Dhankhar got visibly angry.
“You may be anybody, you may be a celebrity, you have to understand the decorum,” Dhankhar hit back.
Later, speaking to the media in parliament complex, Jaya Bachchan said that she had objections to the tone used by the Chairman.
“We are not school children. Some of us are senior citizens. I was upset with the tone and especially when the Leader of Opposition stood up to speak, he switched off the mike,” the Samajwadi Party MP said.
The Rajya Sabha was adjourned thrice after lunch recess on Friday as the Opposition continued to be aggressive on their stand.
Back in the Chair after the third adjournment of the House, Dhankhar said, “While I hold every member in high regard and have no personal issue with anyone, I am deeply hurt at the intemperate language without any premise, going to media, getting traction, and I am sure everyone in the country will focus on what will be made available.”
Subsequently, the House was adjourned sine die, ahead of the schedule.
The Monsoon session of the Parliament which commenced on July 22 was scheduled to conclude on August 12, 2024.
The Union Budget 2024-25 was presented during this session.
