Bhopal: The city of Bhopal witnessed a massive influx of devotees on the fourth Somwar (Monday) of the holy month of Sawan. Known for its religious fervor, this day holds special significance for followers of Lord Shiva, who thronged various temples across the city to offer prayers and perform traditional rituals.
As the sun rose over Bhopal, thousands of devotees began gathering at prominent Shiva temples, including the famous Bhojpur Shiv Mandir, Mahadev Pashupatinath Temple, and Gufa Mandir. The day began with the traditional “Mangal Aarti,” performed at the break of dawn, signaling the commencement of the day’s worship.
At the Bhojpur Shiv Mandir, the atmosphere was charged with devotion as devotees queued up to perform “Jalabhishek” – the ritual of pouring water, milk, and honey over the Shivalinga. This act is believed to purify the soul and wash away sins. The temple priests guided the devotees through the rituals, chanting sacred mantras to invoke the blessings of Lord Shiva.
Special Offerings and Rituals
On this auspicious day, many devotees observed a strict fast, consuming only fruits and milk throughout the day. The fast is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and fulfillment of desires. Women, in particular, were seen offering special prayers for the well-being of their families, tying threads around the sacred Peepal tree, which is revered as a manifestation of Lord Vishnu.
At the Mahadev Pashupatinath Temple, devotees offered “Bel Patra” (Bilva leaves), flowers, and “Bhaang” (cannabis leaves) to the deity. According to tradition, these offerings are considered highly auspicious and are believed to appease Lord Shiva. The temple premises were adorned with vibrant floral decorations, and the aroma of incense filled the air, creating a serene environment for worship.
In the Gufa Mandir, known for its unique underground shrine, devotees participated in “Rudra Abhishek,” a special ritual involving the recitation of Vedic hymns and the pouring of sacred substances like ghee, curd, and honey over the Shivalinga. This ritual is performed to seek the protection and blessings of Lord Shiva, ensuring the spiritual upliftment of the devotees.
