BSNL to close urban telephone exchanges serving less than 50 connections

Phagwara, Mar 19 (UNI) The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has decided to close all urban telephone exchanges serving only less than 50 landline connections, a company official said on Tuesday.

Last year, the state-run public sector undertaking had decided to shut down rural telephone exchanges serving less than 20 landline telephone connections.

Senior Divisional Officer (Telephones), Phagwara, Tilak Raj said here as per instructions issued by higher authorities BSNL is working to increase the number of FTTH (Fibre To The Home) connections and convincing people to convert their land line connections into FTTH only.

He confirmed that presently number of landline connections in Phagwara, a city in Punjab’s Kapurthala district. is only 300. A few years back, the city had around 4,000 BSNL landline connections. Interestingly, no lineman is available in Phagwara telephone exchange.
