Amazon India launches sanitary napkin production unit in Howrah district

Kolkata, Aug 18 (UNI) Amazon India on Friday announced the launch of a state-of-the-art sanitary napkin production unit in Howrah district as part of its community engagement initiative to empower women across West Bengal.

The state-of-the-art facility located at Chandripur village in Howrah district, was set up in partnership with a localpan chayat women’s self-help group, with the aim of providing women in the region with a scalable livelihood option.

“The unit will create employment opportunities for over 20 women and has the capacity to produce 1200 sanitary pads per hour.

This launch is a testament of Amazon India’s commitment towards building capacities of communities and empowering community members,” a senior official said.

“At Amazon India, we remain committed to build capacities of communities living in the vicinity of Amazon’s Fulfillment Centers, Sortation Centers and Delivery Stations across the country.

Through Amazon India’s various community engagement initiatives, we aim to empower the community members across different areas like health and hygiene, education, women empowerment, skilling & livelihoods, and environment.

In 2020, Amazon launched a community resource center in Chandripur village in Howrah district, to provide education, health, and women’s empowerment initiatives.

Amazon also formed a Village Level Organization (VLO) of women from the community and helped them set up a sanitary pad bank. This enabled support to the Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) program for the women and young girls of the communities.

In June 2023, Amazon inaugurated three advanced sanitary napkin units in Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. The units are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and can produce 1200 sanitary pads per hour.
