1 killed, 2 injured in Israeli airstrikes in S. Lebanon

Beirut, May 16 (UNI) A Syrian was killed and two others sustained injuries on Wednesday in an Israeli strike on the Mansouri Plain in southern Lebanon, Lebanese military sources said.

The sources said that the wounded Syrians were transferred by the Lebanese Civil Defense to a hospital in the southwestern city of Tyre.

The sources added that Israel carried out seven airstrikes on five towns and villages, including the Jabal al-Rayhan area of the Jezzine region, and launched about 50 shells towards 11 towns and villages in the border region of southern Lebanon.

They added that they had monitored the launch of more than 60 surface-to-surface missiles and several drones from Lebanon towards northern Israel.

In response to Israel’s assassination of a commander in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, Hezbollah said its fighters had used missiles and drones to attack several sites, including the Ilaniya Base west of the city of Tabarayya, the headquarters of the surveillance unit at the Meron base, and the headquarters of the 91st Division’s command at the Baranit barracks.

Tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border escalated on Oct. 8, 2023, following a barrage of rockets launched by the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah toward Israel in solidarity with Hamas’s attack on Israel the day before. Israel then retaliated by firing heavy artillery toward southeastern Lebanon.

The confrontations between Hezbollah and Israel have killed 463 people on the Lebanese side, including 291 Hezbollah members and 86 civilians, according to Lebanese security sources.
