Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina shares warm hugs with Gandhi family

New Delhi, June 10 (UNI) Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi, along with her son and former party president Rahul Gandhi, and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday called on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during which they all shared warm hugs with the visiting Bangladeshi leader.

The Congress party put up a video of the meeting, which showed Sonia Gandhi sharing a warm, close hug with Sheikh Hasina, after which Rahul Gandhi did a namaste to the Bangladeshi PM, who pulled him into a hug. Then Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is party general secretary, and Sheikh Hasina shared a warm close hug.

Later, they met with the delegation accompanying the Bangladeshi PM.

Sheikh Hasina and the Gandhi family share close ties as then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi played a key role in the 1971 war that led to the creation of Bangladesh, and the Bangladesh PM’s father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader of Bangladesh, shared good ties with Indira Gandhi.

Sheikh Hasina was also sheltered in India after her father and other members of her family were brutally assassinated in August 1975. Then PM Indira Gandhi had given her shelter and she lived incognito in Delhi for a few years.

The Congress posted on X that the two sides “discussed a wide range of topics to strengthen the India-Bangladesh bond based on trust, cooperation, and a commitment to mutual growth”.
