Atishi accuses Delhi LG of playing politics over Yamuna water issue

New Delhi, Jan 29 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Wednesday accused Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena of playing politics on Yamuna water issue, stating that he should either fulfill his constitutional responsibilities or resign from his position.

In a letter written to the Lieutenant Governor in response to one received from his office on January 28th, Atishi said, “It is very disappointing, but not surprising, that instead of addressing the dangerous levels of ammonia in Delhi’s water, you have made baseless allegations and resorted to false propaganda to divert attention and completely fail in fulfilling your responsibilities.”

“As the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, your constitutional responsibility is to the people of Delhi, not to your political masters and the BJP. You swore to uphold and protect the Constitution and laws, and to dedicate yourself to the welfare of the people of Delhi. However, your actions show that your main priority is to follow the orders from the BJP, rather than protecting the Constitution or prioritizing the welfare of Delhi’s people,” she added.

The Chief Minister said, “Let us talk about the facts. Arvind Kejriwal raised the issue that the water from the Yamuna River is filled with dangerously high levels of ammonia. The letter from the CEO of the Delhi Jal Board confirms this. Clearly, under your pressure, an official had to defend the supply of this toxic water. Your letter also acknowledges that the current ammonia level in the water is 7.2 ppm, which is 700% above the prescribed limit.

Both you and the CEO of the Delhi Jal Board are confirming this serious issue raised by Arvind Kejriwal.”

“At this critical juncture, you had two options: prioritize the public’s interest or prioritize political interests. Unfortunately, you chose the latter,” she further said.

“It is no secret that you have always maintained an interest in political matters, but in this serious case, which concerns the health and safety of the public, I had hoped that you would put politics aside. You remained loyal to your political masters, even though it impacted the lives and health of Delhi’s residents. If you had focused your energy on investigating the dangers of high ammonia levels in water rather than attacking Arvind Kejriwal, you would have known that such pollution poses serious health risks.

High ammonia levels in water can damage organs and cause developmental issues,” Atishi said.

“You accused us of making provocative statements, but I ask you one question: Is it not provocative to deliberately supply toxic water to the people of Delhi? Is it not shirking responsibility to defend the BJP-ruled Haryana government while ignoring the genuine concerns of millions of people?,” she added.
