Asiad: First-ever women’s doubles medal in table tennis confirmed

Hangzhou, Sep 30 (UNI) India confirmed their first-ever medal in the women’s doubles table tennis event at the Asian Games after Sutirtha Mukherjee and Ayhika Mukherjee defeated reigning world champions Chen Meng and Wang Yidi in the quarterfinals here on Saturday.

The eighth-seeded Indian pair won 11-5, 11-5, 5-11, 11-9.

This is only the third Asian Games medal for India. The men’s team and mixed doubles – Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra – won bronze in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.

Surtirtha and Ayhika will compete with DPR Korea’s Suyong Cha and Sugyong Pak in the women’s doubles table tennis semifinal.

“The match was really amazing (and) we were not scared at all. They are amazing (the Chinese players), the world’s best, but we were at our best,” Ayhika said.
