First Sarus Festival Celebrated to Raise Awareness

The Regional Museum of Natural History (RMNH), Bhopal in collaboration with the Bhopal Birds Conservation Society and VNS Nature Saviour, jointly organized the First Sarus Festival on June 28, 2025. The two-day event aimed to spread awareness among the public about the conservation of the Sarus Crane, the world’s tallest flying bird and a symbol of ecological balance in wetlands.

On the first day, a painting competition was held for college students on the theme “Sarus in Wetlands.” Participants artistically portrayed the natural habitat, beauty, and significance of the Sarus Crane through their vibrant paintings, highlighting the urgent need for its protection. Alongside, a clay modeling workshop was also conducted on the theme ‘Sarus Crane’, encouraging creativity while promoting conservation education.

Following these engaging activities, the Chief Guest, Mr. Subhranjan Sen, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), and Ms. Shilpi Diwakar, Comptroller of Raj Bhavan, Bhopal, inaugurated a photography exhibition on the Sarus Crane. The exhibition displayed 30 selected photographs from 23 photographers across India, capturing the various aspects of the crane’s life and habitat.

At the end of the program, participation certificates were distributed to all attendees. Prominent personalities including Dr. Beenish Rafat (Scientist-D and In-charge, RMNH), Shri Manik Lal Gupta (Scientist-C), Dr. Sangeeta Rajgir, and Mohd. Khalique from the Bhopal Birds Conservation Society were present at the event, making it a memorable celebration of nature and cultural heritage.
