US Tariffs on Indian imports a passing phase, Modi govt addressing the issue, solution will be found soon : VP

Chennai, Oct 29 (UNI) Terming the imposition of Indian import tariffs by US as a passing phase,Vice President C P Radhakrishnan today said the Government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was taking all steps to address the issue and a good solution would be found soon.

A good solution will be arrived at soon and the Central government has taken all steps to address the issue, he said, at a felicitation function in his birth place of Tiruppur district, where he addressed the Knitwear industry personnel and heard about their grievances in the wake of US action.

He said the US imports tariff impsoed by President Donald Trump was a passing phase that posed a big challenge to the knitwear industry Mr Radhakrishnan assured that there was hope for good tidings as the Modi government has initiated all measures to address the issue.

“With the current tariff rates, the textile industry cannot survive as US market accounts for half the textile exports. When union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal described the situation as tough, and that the negotiations were in progress, I insisted on faith (for positive outcome)”, he said.

Urging the textile and knitwear industries to remain resolute and hope for getting to a situation were they could double their exports to future in the coming days, he said the Government at the centre was addressing the issue and a good solution would be arrived at soon.

He also assured that the other problems faced by the Knitwear industry would also be addressed by the union government and promised his full support and help to sustain this sector.

Later, Mr Radhakrishnan flew to Madurai, where he offered worship at the famous Meenkashi Amman Temple. He was received by the temple priests with the traditional Poorna Kumbh honours.

The Vice-President will be visiting Pasumpon in Ramanathapuram district tomorrow where he would pay tributes at the memorial of freedom figher Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar after which he would leave for New Delhi rom Madurai.
