- MP Water Resources Minister calls for flood preparedness
Bhopal: Water Resources Minister Tulsiram Silawat has directed officials to take all necessary precautionary measures to prevent floods across Madhya Pradesh. Chairing a review meeting at the State Flood Control Room at the Bodhi office on Thursday, the Minister emphasized continuous monitoring of water levels in dams and reservoirs and called for swift coordination with disaster management departments.
Silawat instructed that any reports of excessive rainfall or flood-like situations must be responded to with immediate action. The meeting was attended by Chief Engineer R.D. Ahirwar, Superintending Engineers, and flood control officials.
Officials reported that of the 286 major dams monitored through the Reservoir Level Monitoring System, 6 reservoirs currently hold over 90% capacity, 7 are between 75–90%, 22 are between 50–75%, 43 between 25–50%, 52 between 10–25%, and 156 have less than 10% storage.
As of today, the average water storage in major reservoirs stands at 35.34%, a 10.25% increase from the same time last year, when it was 25.76%.
This improvement is due to a strong monsoon in 2025, with Madhya Pradesh receiving 230.8 mm of rainfall so far, which is 48% above the state’s average. The eastern region recorded 30% more rainfall than normal, while the western region received 65% more.
In contrast, on this date last year, the state had received only 142 mm of rainfall, 9% below the seasonal average.
The Minister termed the reservoir levels “satisfactory” but stressed the need for continued vigilance, especially in flood-prone areas, to ensure timely response and public safety.
