Several school buildings in Kerala over 100 years old: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram, July 25 (UNI) As several school buildings in Kerala are over 100 years old, the demolition of such structures will be expedited, State General Education Minister V. Sivankutty has said.

“Contractors who win the demolition bids are expected to demolish the buildings and remove the debris. However, in many cases, local self-government institutions have imposed excessive fees for the process, causing significant delays in demolishing the old buildings,” the Minister said yesterday evening.

For the first time in Kerala’s educational history, new school buildings worth Rs 5,000 crore have been constructed in public schools using various funding sources. However, even after classes have commenced in these new buildings, many of the old structures continue to remain on the premises.

The minister urged those responsible to act without delay and called upon local self-government bodies and residents in the area to remain vigilant and cooperative in this matter.

Emphasizing that the matter will be taken seriously, and that necessary actions will be taken urgently and lawfully to ensure the timely removal of these old structures, he warned that if the issue is not addressed promptly, there is a risk of these buildings collapsing.
