Sea swell surge: Warning issued for Kerala Coast

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 3 (UNI) In view of the ongoing swell surge phenomenon, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued an alert indicating a high possibility of coastal inundation along the Kerala coast.

Coastal inundation is expected due to high waves ranging between 1.5 and 1.8 meters from 5.30 pm on August 3 to 8.30 pm on August 4.

The affected coastal areas include Thiruvananthapuram (from Kappil to Pozhiyoor), Kollam (from Alappad to Edava), and Alappuzha (from Chellanam to Azhikkal Jetty).

Similarly, on the Kanyakumari coast, waves ranging from 1.6 to 1.9 meters are expected from 11.30 am on August 3 to 11.30 am on August 4, with a high likelihood of coastal inundation.

Due to the forecasted conditions, fisherfolk and coastal residents are advised to exercise extreme caution.

People are advised to avoid staying in areas prone to sea incursion and to move to safer locations as directed by local authorities, especially as sea conditions are expected to deteriorate.

Fisherfolk are advised not to venture into the sea in small boats or canoes during this period. Launching or beaching of fishing vessels during the swell surge is extremely dangerous and must be strictly avoided.

All fishing vessels should be securely moored at harbors, with adequate spacing maintained to prevent collision-related damage.

Tourists are strongly advised to avoid all beach-related tourism, and recreational sea activities should be completely suspended until INCOIS withdraws the warning.

People are urged to avoid visiting beaches or engaging in any recreational sea activities and to exercise special caution in areas vulnerable to coastal erosion.

INCOIS will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary, it said.
