PM Modi holds talks with Argentine President Javier Milei in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires/New Delhi, July 5 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi held delegation-level talks with the President of Argentina Javier Milei in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi paid tribute at San Martin Memorial in Buenos Aires.

The Monumento al General San Martín is an imposing equestrian monument honouring José de San Martín, the liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru.

The PM arrived in Buenos Aires on Thursday night the third leg of his five-nation visit.

His visit to Argentina is the first bilateral visit by an Indian PM in 57 years.

The two sides are expected to focus on clean energy, digital health, defence and rare earths.

India and Argentina have significantly advanced bilateral cooperation in the mineral resources sector, particularly in lithium—a critical input for India’s green energy transition. An MOU on cooperation in the field of mineral resources was signed in August 2022 between India and Argentina. The first meeting of Joint Working Group under the MOU was held in January 2025.

India-Argentina bilateral trade more than doubled in three years from 2019 to 2022, peaking at USD 6.4 billion in 2022. In 2021 and 2022, India was Argentina’s 4th largest trading partner.

Argentina is one of the prime suppliers of edible oils – soyabean and sunflower – to India. In 2024, total annual bilateral trade between India and Argentina rose by 33% to USD 5.23 billion, positioning India as Argentina’s fifth-largest trading partner and export destination.

In 2025, India is the fourth largest trading partner of Argentina. Indo-Argentine trade experienced a significant resurgence in bilateral trade and strategic cooperation during the first quarter of 2025, registering an impressive growth of 53.9%, with total trade valued at USD 2.05 billion.

Major items of export from India to Argentina are Petroleum Products, Agro Chemicals, Manmade Yarn, Bulk Drugs & Drug Intermediates, Residual Chemical & Allied Products, Organic Chemicals, Dyes, Drug Formulations.

Major items of import from Argentina are Vegetable oils, Gold, Finished and Raw Leather, and Residual Chemicals & Allied Products. Vegetable Oils (Soya and Sunflower) constitute over more than 80% of total Argentine exports to India.
