- Historic organ transplant at AIIMS Bhopal
Bhopal: In a landmark achievement, AIIMS Bhopal successfully conducted organ retrieval from a 37-year-old brain-dead patient, marking a significant step in organ transplantation in the region. The operation, conducted under the leadership of Executive Director & CEO Prof. (Dr.) Madhabananda Kar and Deputy Director Sandesh Jain, was supported by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav. The patient, admitted after a severe head injury, was critically assessed by a team of four doctors over two separate six-hour evaluations, ultimately confirming brain death.
Following the family’s consent for organ donation, the team at AIIMS Bhopal commenced organ harvesting at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday. The heart was successfully transplanted into a 41-year-old recipient, marking AIIMS Bhopal’s third heart transplant. The recipient is currently in the ICU, with the next 48 hours being crucial for recovery. Financial support for the transplant was provided by the Chief Minister and the institute itself.
Additionally, the patient’s kidneys were transplanted, with one going to a 30-year-old patient at AIIMS Bhopal and the other sent to Bansal Hospital. This marked the 16th successful kidney transplant at the institute. Two corneas were also retrieved, restoring sight to two patients. In an innovative step, the postmortem was conducted in the operation theatre, a first for AIIMS Bhopal, ensuring legal compliance.
Following the organ donation, a police and hospital team provided a guard of honor, reinforcing the importance of organ donation awareness. The success of this operation highlights AIIMS Bhopal’s advanced medical capabilities and commitment to saving lives through organ donation.
