MP becomes first state to take entire court proceedings online

Bhopal: In a groundbreaking move, Madhya Pradesh has become the first state in India to make entire court proceedings fully online. The state government has issued an official notification approving this digital transformation, based on a detailed draft prepared by the High Court.

Under this new system, all judicial activities—including testimonies, trials, arguments, and investigations—can now be conducted via video conferencing (VC). This marks a significant leap toward digital justice delivery in India.

For the first time, the High Court has officially designated specific software platforms for virtual court proceedings. Along with that, strict data security protocols and recording mechanisms have been outlined to ensure transparency and privacy. Unauthorized individuals will be barred from accessing or recording any hearing.

This transformation comes under the newly framed “Electronic Communication and Use of Audio-Video Electronic Medium Rules – 2025”, which has now been formally published in the state gazette and enacted.

Legal experts say the move is expected to dramatically speed up the resolution of pending cases, reduce delays caused by the absence of witnesses or investigating officers, and make the justice system more accessible.

The digital shift not only modernizes courtrooms but also aligns with India’s broader vision of Digital Governance and Ease of Justice. With Madhya Pradesh taking the lead, other states are likely to follow suit in digitizing their judicial systems.
