More women should opt for careers in law: Murmu

Jabalpur, Sep 27 (UNI) Underlining the fact that women’s empowerment comprises the keystone for an inclusive Bharat, President Droupadi Murmu averred on Wednesday that enhanced participation of womenfolk in the Third Estate shall prove beneficial for the nation.

Addressing the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s Annexe Building here, the First Citizen said, “Women are synonymous with natural justice as a mother never discriminates between her children. Sentiments and sensitivity are vital in the judicial process.”

The visiting dignitary described the Women’s Reservation Bill as nothing short of a revolutionary initiative for political empowerment of that gender.

“Uncomplicated and rapid judgements are necessary. Numerous under-trial inmates are compelled to remain behind bars. On several earlier occasions also, I have mentioned that the government should dwell over this grave issue and chart out a suitable course of action. Approximately 4.5 crore cases are pending in lower courts and some for two to three decades,” she underlined.

The President appreciated a special campaign underway in this state where district courts are focusing on speedy disposal of old lawsuits.

“An alternative and inexpensive system of settling disputes should be encouraged. One proposal for legislation – which is under consideration – shall ensure institutional approval for mediation,” she noted.

Infrastructure development is a key aspect and technology is playing a crucial role in every sector including the judiciary, Mrs Murmu said, adding that e-courts, e-filing etc also boast the benefits of transparency plus natural resource conservation owing to lesser consumption of paper.

“We owe a debt to society that can be settled by helping the backward. Organisations should come forward to assist the indigent vis-à-vis litigation,” the President felt.
