Modi govt’s 11 years have harmed democracy, economy, society: Kharge

New Delhi, June 9 (UNI) Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday hit out at the Modi government alleging that the past 11 years have deeply harmed “Indian democracy, the economy, and the country’s social fabric”.

In a statement on social media platform X, Kharge accused the BJP-RSS alliance of systematically weakening constitutional institutions and undermining their autonomy.

He claimed that democratic values have been eroded through backdoor efforts to topple elected governments and by imposing a one-party authoritarian rule. “The rights of states have been ignored, and the federal structure has been undermined,” he said.

Kharge alleged that the ruling dispensation has created an atmosphere of fear, hatred, and intimidation. “Exploitation of Dalits, Adivasis, backward classes, minorities, and other marginalised communities has increased. There is an ongoing conspiracy to deprive them of their rights to reservation and equality,” he added.

He cited the “ongoing violence in Manipur” as a glaring example of what he described as the “BJP’s administrative failure”.

Kharge also criticised the government’s economic record, saying the BJP-RSS regime has conditioned the nation to accept a lower GDP growth rate of 5–6 per cent, compared to an average of 8 per cent during the UPA era. He alleged that the “promise of two crore jobs per year remains unfulfilled” and claimed that “crores of jobs have actually been lost” under the current administration.

“Inflation has reduced public savings to the lowest in 50 years, while economic inequality has reached its highest level in a century. Demonetisation, flawed GST implementation, an unplanned lockdown, and assaults on the unorganised sector have destroyed the futures of millions,” Kharge claimed.

He further criticised several flagship schemes of the government — including Make in India, Startup India, Stand Up India, Digital India, Namami Gange, and 100 Smart Cities — as having “failed to deliver”.

He accused the Modi government of merely inaugurating infrastructure built during the UPA era.
