Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 2 (UNI) With the Onam festival around the corner, the Kerala Excise Department has chalked out a comprehensive action plan to intensify enforcement activities across the state.
The special drive, aimed at ensuring a safe and law-abiding festive season, will focus on curbing the smuggling of spirit, the production and sale of illicit liquor, and the trafficking, sale, and manufacture of narcotic drugs.
The department will conduct round-the-clock surveillance from August 4 to September 10, covering key checkpoints, border areas, and licensed establishments.
Excise officials have been directed to step up inspections at bars, toddy shops, beer and wine parlours, and ayurvedic clinics to ensure compliance with licensing norms.
To enhance vigilance, Thiruvananthapuram district has been divided into two operational zones, each with dedicated 24/7 tracking force units. Check-posts at border areas, particularly in high-risk zones such as Amaravila, will conduct intensive vehicle checks to intercept smuggling attempts.
A 24-hour control room has been established at the district headquarters to receive public complaints and tip-offs.
The Excise Department has assured that the identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential, encouraging public participation in keeping the Onam celebrations free from illegal substances.
Officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest excise office or control room.
The Excise Department’s proactive approach is part of a broader strategy to maintain law and order and ensure that Onam – Kerala’s biggest cultural celebration – remains safe, peaceful, and free from the influence of illicit substances.
