Heavy rainfall alerts issued across Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 25 (UNI) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of Orange and Yellow alerts across Kerala as the state braces for heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next five days.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has urged residents to remain vigilant and follow the safety directions issued by district and local authorities.
According to the latest IMD forecast, isolated heavy rainfall measuring between 7 and 11 cm in 24 hours is likely to occur in several districts from October 25 to 28.
On October 25, heavy rainfall is expected at one or two places in Kannur and Kasaragod districts. The following day, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod are likely to receive similar spells of rain.
On October 27, heavy rainfall is forecast for Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod, while on October 28, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki may experience heavy downpours.
The IMD has issued Orange Alerts for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kannur and Kasaragod on October 24, indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours.
Yellow Alerts have been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad on October 24; Kannur and Kasaragod on October 25; Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on October 26; Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on October 27; and Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki on October 28.
The KSDMA has cautioned that heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms may trigger landslides, flash floods and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.
People living in hilly regions, near riverbanks, reservoirs and low-lying zones have been advised to move to safer locations as a precautionary measure. Residents are also urged to avoid travel through waterlogged roads and to refrain from entering rivers, streams and other water bodies for bathing, fishing or sightseeing.
The Authority has further advised the public to stay away from bridges and elevated platforms near overflowing rivers and to refrain from taking selfies or gathering near dangerous spots. Those living in houses with weak structures or unstable roofs have been asked to exercise special caution due to the likelihood of strong winds.
Travel to hilly and high-risk areas should be avoided until weather conditions improve. Motorists are advised to be extra careful on roads adjacent to water bodies and on those undergoing maintenance. The risk of accidents increases during intense rain, and driving through flooded stretches should be strictly avoided.
Residents in disaster-prone regions are encouraged to prepare emergency kits and ensure that essential supplies and documents are kept safely.
