- Residents protest unannounced gate opening
Gwalior: Gwalior is facing severe flooding after the gates of three dams—Ramaua, Alapur, and Veerpur—were opened to release excess water. The decision, particularly at the Veerpur Dam, has sparked outrage and a “water protest” from residents of low-lying areas, who claim they were given no prior warning before the gates were opened for the first time in 36 years.
Unannounced flood creates chaos
As the gates were opened, floodwaters quickly inundated homes and neighborhoods, putting lives and property at risk. The residents of the flooded communities claim that they were at the collector’s office all day asking for help but were not given any warning that the gates would be opened late at night, when the worst of the damage happened.
The Laliapura settlement is completely submerged, forcing dozens of families to evacuate to relief camps and their relatives’ homes. The floodwaters are knee-deep in some areas, and residents’ belongings and food supplies are seen floating in the water. The NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) has been deployed to help rescue people and move them to safer locations.
The region has been hit with three consecutive days of heavy rainfall, with Gwalior receiving 1380 mm of rain this monsoon season alone. As the city continues to deal with the rising waters, residents are protesting the lack of communication from authorities.
