Cricket: Uganda beats Canada by 7 wickets in 2025 Victoria Series

Kampala, Oct. 21 (UNI) Host Uganda opened the 2025 Victoria Series campaign on a winning note by beating Canada by seven wickets on Monday.

The visitors elected to bat first but were 67 all out in 19 overs at the Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala.

Powered by a disciplined bowling performance from Kevin Amuge and a composed chase led by team captain Janet Mbabazi, Uganda put on 68/3 in 11.5 overs.

Canada’s Achini Perera and Amarpal Kaur made 13 and 18 runs respectively, in a game that Uganda kept very tight.

Amuge was the standout performer with the ball, finishing with 4/17 in four overs. She received solid support from Immaculate Nakisuyi, who claimed 2/13 in her full quota.

In Uganda’s chase, captain Mbabazi notched a game-high 37 runs, while Immaculate Nakisuuyi and Rita Musaamali also contributed to the chase and victory.

“We’re happy with the win, but one of our key focus areas from the qualifiers is our batting. We hope to improve in the coming games and build on this start,” said Mbabazi afterwards.

Canada captain Amarpal Kaur acknowledged Uganda’s dominance but remained optimistic that his team would improve in the upcoming matches. “It wasn’t about the pitch, we just didn’t bat well. The conditions here in Uganda are good for us as a team, and we’re looking forward to a strong tournament ahead,” added Kaur.

Uganda will face Canada again on Tuesday in the second match of the series. The host nation is using the series as preparation for the ICC Women’s Emerging Trophy in Thailand next month.
