Bhopal: In a groundbreaking medical achievement, AIIMS Bhopal has successfully performed Central India’s first artificial jaw replacement surgery using a custom-made titanium implant. This milestone was achieved under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal.
The surgery was conducted on a 62-year-old woman from Mandsaur, who had endured chronic jaw pain, facial deformity, and severe difficulty in eating and speaking. Previous attempts at reconstruction with titanium plates at private hospitals had failed due to repeated breakage. After seeking help from several medical institutions without success, the patient approached the Trauma and Emergency Department at AIIMS Bhopal.
Implant was milled from a solid titanium block
A multidisciplinary team led by Dr BL Soni, a maxillofacial surgeon with over a decade of experience in computer-assisted facial reconstruction, developed a customized solution. The implant, designed through virtual surgical planning and medical imaging, was milled from a solid titanium block—ensuring superior strength and fit compared to conventional 3D-printed alternatives.
To ensure accuracy, a 3D-printed model of the patient’s jaw was created, and the implant was tested before surgery. The complex procedure was executed with precision under the supervision of Prof. Mohammad Yunus and Dr. Saurabh.
Post-surgery, the patient made a swift recovery and regained the ability to speak and eat. Her family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the medical team. Prof. Singh congratulated the team, reaffirming AIIMS Bhopal’s commitment to advanced, patient-centric care.
