South Korea to hold snap presidential election

Seoul, June 3 (UNI) South Korea will hold a snap presidential election on Tuesday following the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol in early April.

Five candidates are running for the country’s top job, but Lee Jae-myung, the candidate from the opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DP), and Kim Moon-soo of the ruling conservative People Power Party (PPP) are considered the main contenders, although recent opinion polls have showed that Lee is favored by 45% and Kim by 36%.

The winner, who will serve a single term of five years, will be sworn in on Wednesday without the standard two-month transition period.
