- Lights off campaign marks beginning of wider resistance
Bhopal, In a symbolic and peaceful show of dissent, members of the Muslim community across Bhopal observed a “lights-off” protest against recent changes to the Waqf property laws. From 9:00 PM to 9:30 PM on April 30, homes and shops voluntarily switched off their electricity to express opposition and solidarity under the leadership of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board – Tahaffuz-e-Auqaf.
The protest, described as the first step in a broader movement, was aimed at raising awareness about what the organizers see as an attack on the community’s religious heritage and legal rights regarding Waqf properties.
MLA and State Convenor of the movement, Arif Masood, urged the community to remain united and disciplined in their protest. “This is not just about turning off lights—it’s about igniting the voice of our heritage and rightful claim,” he said.
A recent meeting in Bhopal laid the groundwork for a phased resistance campaign, with religious scholars, community leaders, and representatives from across Madhya Pradesh pledging support. Cities including Indore, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Ratlam, Khandwa, Sagar, Vidisha, and Burhanpur also saw community preparations and participation in the protest.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has indicated that this is only the beginning, with more demonstrations to follow as the community continues to voice concerns over what it sees as unilateral and unjust amendments to Waqf property governance.
