New York, Aug 29 (UNI) Third seed Alexander Zverev moved into the third round of the US Open today IST after defeating Britain’s Jacob Fearnley 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in Louis Armstrong Stadium.
The German, still in search of his maiden Grand Slam title, produced a controlled display, breaking Fearnley in the opening game of the first set and maintaining pressure throughout the contest.
Although the 22-year-old Briton raised his level in the third set, Zverev eventually closed out the match on his sixth match point. “There are no easy matches. The level of tennis is improving with everybody playing great these days,” Zverev said after the win.
Zverev, a finalist at three majors and winner of the Tokyo Olympic gold medal, is regarded as one of the strongest contenders outside the game’s dominant duo. He has previously reached finals at the Australian Open (2025), Roland Garros (2024) and the US Open (2020), but is still chasing the elusive first Slam crown.
Fearnley, ranked 60, showed glimpses of promise but struggled with consistency, tallying five double faults and 14 unforced errors while also receiving treatment for a sore shoulder. The former Texas Christian University standout continues to adapt to the demands of the ATP Tour after success at the Challenger level.
Zverev will next face either Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, seeded 25th, or unseeded Russian Roman Safiullin in the third round.
“I am here to spoil the party, and that’s what I plan to do,” Zverev added.
