YouTube will pay USD 24.5 mln to settle Trump Lawsuit of account suspension

New Delhi, Sep 30 (UNI) Google-owned YouTube has agreed to pay USD 24.5 million to settle a lawsuit brought by US President Donald Trump against YouTube for the suspension of his account.

Trump’s account was suspended in relation to the January 6 riots in 2021.

On Jan 6, 2021 the United States Capitol in Washington D.C. was attacked by a mob of supporters of President Donald Trump in an attempted self-coup, two months after his defeat in the 2020 Presidential election.

Welcoming the decision, Donald Trump today posted on TruthSocial, “ YouTube SURRENDERS! Pays President Trump $ 24.5 MILLION for illegal ban. This MASSIVE victory proves Big Tech censorship has consequences. Every shadowbanned patriot deserves justice!

“Trump fought for a speech and WON ! the post added.

When YouTube suspended Trump’s account, it cited that his channel had violated the website’s policies against inciting violence.

In 2021, Donald Trump filed lawsuits against YouTube, Facebook, and X (formerly known as Twitter) after the companies suspended his accounts. While filing lawsuits, he said these platforms accumulated an unprecedented concentration of power and market share.

Today, as per the filing submitted by YouTube at the US District Court for the Northern District of California, YouTube will contribute USD 22 million on behalf of Trump to the Trust for the National Mall, a non-profit.

Basically, Trust for the National Mall is dedicated to restoring, enriching, and preserving the National Mall for generations to come.

Moreover, the remaining USD 2.5 million will go to other plaintiffs in the case, including the American Conservative union and American author Naomi Wolf, said the court filing.

Earlier this year, Meta, the owner of Facebook and Twitter (X), also settled the case with Trump by offering compensation for the filing.
