Women’s World Cup win will inspire future champions: PM Modi

New Delhi, Nov 3 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed India’s maiden ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup victory, describing it as a “historic win” that promises to inspire the next generation of sports stars.

India’s wait for an ICC title finally ended in Navi Mumbai, as Harmanpreet Kaur’s side defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final at a packed Dr. DY Patil Stadium. With remarkable skill, confidence, and composure, the Indian team lifted their first-ever ICC trophy, joining Australia, England, and New Zealand among the elite list of ODI world champions.

Taking to the social media platform X, PM Modi lauded the team’s extraordinary performance throughout the tournament. He wrote, “A spectacular win by the Indian team in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 Finals. Their performance in the final was marked by great skill and confidence. The team showed exceptional teamwork and tenacity throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our players. This historic win will motivate future champions to take up sports.”

This landmark achievement comes after India’s previous final appearances in 2005 and 2017, where the title narrowly eluded them. The victory was fueled by standout individual performances, notably ‘Player of the Match’ Shafali Verma, who scored a commanding 87 runs, and Deepti Sharma’s all-round brilliance. Sharma not only contributed a crucial 58 runs but also dismantled South Africa’s batting lineup with a five-wicket haul. Her outstanding tournament showing earned her the ‘Player of the Tournament’ accolade.

The win, witnessed by a packed and enthusiastic crowd, marks a significant milestone in the rise of women’s cricket in India, offering a powerful source of inspiration for young athletes nationwide.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also extended his wishes to the team, saying the women cricketers had “won hearts across the nation.”

“Congratulations to Team India on clinching the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025! What a display of courage, skill, and belief. You’ve not just won a trophy, you’ve won hearts across the nation. Every Indian is proud of you! ‘Saare Jahan se accha Hindustan humaara’. A golden moment for Indian cricket and for women in sports!” Birla said on X.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah too congratulated the team, calling it a crowning moment for the nation. “Hats off to the world champion Team India. It is a crowning moment for the nation, as our team lifts the #ICCWomensWorldCup2025, elevating India’s pride to the skies. Your stellar cricketing skills paved the path of inspiration for millions of girls. Congratulations to the entire team,” Shah posted on X.

The victory marks a defining moment for Indian women’s cricket, capping years of perseverance and near misses, and heralding a new era of success for women’s sports in the country.
